What does 4G stand for?

I keep hearing commercials for phone networks that are 3G and 4G, but what does that really mean?  I know that 4G is supposed to be an upgrade to 3G.  What does the G stand for?  How are phones better with the higher G level than the lower one?

G = generation, so third or fourth generation. It refers to cellular wireless standards – for 4G these relate mainly to speed/capacity of connections. 4G phones have to give a full IP-based service to mobile users (phone or other device).
